Negroni – a welcome guest at parties or on the menu
Summertime – party time. And therefore also the time for a cocktail or two. Cocktails such as the Negroni are perfect for lovers of a sophisticated cocktail with friends who want to set themselves apart from comatose teenagers. It is an aperitif and can therefore be the start of a cocktail party.
Origin of the Negroni
The origin of the Negroni lies in Florence, or to be more precise, the invention can be traced back to the Caffè Casoni in Via d’Tornabuoni, where Count Camillo Negroni ordered an Americano (Campari + Vermouth rosso) with gin from the bartender in 1919. A Negroni therefore consists of the following ingredients:
Two to three ice cubes are placed in the glass.
+ 1/3 gin
1/3 sweet red Vermouth
+ 1/3 Campari.
The glass is garnished with half a slice of orange.
The success of the new cocktail was so great that the Negroni family opened a distillery in Treviso, where they produced the drink ready-mixed.

Variants of the Negroni
A variation of the Negroni that is not expressed in the ingredients is to serve it in a martini glass. This is because it is normally served and enjoyed in a chilled tumbler. If dry spumante is used instead of gin, the cocktail is called Negroni sbagliato (false Negroni). This variation is said to have been invented in Milan. If the gin is replaced by vodka, the variation is called Negrosky. If the Campari is replaced by Cynar, the cocktail is called Cin Cyn. If Campari is replaced by the even more bitter Punt e Mes, the drink is called Punt e Mes Negroni.
