Easter eggs as an Easter custom

For many people, Easter eggs are as much a part of Easter as Santa Claus is part of Christmas. German children take them so much for granted that they often forget where this custom actually comes from. Whether it’s dyed hen’s eggs for breakfast or as a snack at Easter, blown out and painted hen’s eggs in a fresh Easter bouquet or chocolate eggs at the Easter egg hunt on Easter Sunday – Easter simply wouldn’t be Easter without eggs. But where does this connection between eggs and the spring festival come from? This Easter custom of giving and eating eggs is very, very old.

This is what the chocolate egg looks like packaged and unwrapped.

The custom of the Easter egg

Dyed eggs at Easter can be found throughout Christian Europe, from Russia to Greece and Central Europe. However, Easter, as the actual Christian celebration of the resurrection of Jesus, probably adopted this custom from the Yazidi faith in Armenia and Kurdistan, where colored eggs were already part of the spring festival in April 4000 years ago. In the Christian faith, the egg as a symbol of resurrection fitted in very well and so this custom was adopted and spread far beyond the Yazidi faith.

Chocolate eggs for Easter

As you can hardly make a child happy with dyed hen’s eggs and, admittedly, chocolate simply tastes better than a boiled egg, it is fortunate that chocolate eggs are now available. From small solid chocolate eggs to giant chocolate eggs with little surprises inside, everything is available at Easter. These large chocolate eggs can be up to 20 cm high. They may be quicker to find during the egg hunt, but the mass of chocolate quickly makes you forget that. Due to their size, they offer space for a fun surprise inside, which adds to the joy.

The Gustini team wishes you a Happy Easter and a successful egg hunt!
