Stromboli recipe – a different kind of pizza
A stromboli is a rolled pizza that resembles a calzone. When it comes to the filling, whatever tastes good is allowed. Cut into small pieces, stromboli make a great snack on a buffet, at a picnic or in a lunch box.

- 50 g Olives
- 125 g Mozzarella
- 10 Cherry tomatoes
- 1 Zucchini
- 6 Dried tomatoes
- 30 g Pine nuts, roasted in the pan
- 20 Leaf Basil
- 3 EL strained tomatoes
- 50 g Parmesan cheese, grated
Schritt für Schritt durch´s Rezept
- Step 1Sift the flour into a pile on the work surface. Press a well into it with your hand or a spoon and add oil, the yeast dissolved in a little water and a pinch of salt.
- Step 2Knead the dough well and form a smooth ball. Place the ball in a bowl, cover with a cloth and leave to rise for one to two hours.
- Step 3Prepare the filling by halving the olives and cherry tomatoes and finely dicing the mozzarella, zucchini and sun-dried tomatoes. Now mix all of this in a large bowl with the tomato puree, pine nuts, Parmesan and basil.
- Step 4After the dough has rested, take it out of the bowl, knead it again for a few minutes and divide it into four parts.
- Step 5Use the palms of your hands to shape each piece of dough into a rectangle measuring approx. 17 x 24 cm.
- Step 6Spread the filling over the pastry. Leave a border of about 6 cm all around.
- Step 7Now cut the pastry every 2 cm from the edge to the filling.
- Step 8Now fold the strips of dough over the filling and leave the roll to rise for another 20 minutes, covered with a damp cloth.
- Step 9Bake the stromboli for 25-30 minutes at 200° C in a preheated oven until they are golden brown.

The name of this pizza roll comes from the Stromboli volcano. In the 1950s, there was the famous movie “Stromboli” with Ingrid Bergmann and the rolled pizza bread was also invented back then.
However, the recipe is not originally Italian, but comes from America. In Philadelphia in the 1950s, a restaurant owner with Italian roots began selling rolled-up pizza dough with a filling of ham, cheese and peppers. He named his creation “Stromboli”.
