Make your own steak rub

Steak on its own is already a hit, but with a steak rub the steaks become even more impressive and have an incredibly good taste.

From Jens 1 Min Reading time

Rubs or dry marinades make grilled food incredibly aromatic and form a crust when grilling.

Making your own steak rub is easy: in principle, you can use anything you have in your spice cupboard. Simply mix everything together and then grind or process into a coarse powder using a small blender.

What is the difference between herb salt and steak rub?

  • The spices in a rub are often ground a little coarser than in herb salt.
  • A steak rub contains little or no salt.
  • You put much more of the steak rub on the meat than you would use steak salt.

  • 1.5 tsp oregano
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder,
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

Using steak rubs

  1. Brush the steak with a drizzle of olive oil.
  2. Salt the meat to taste (take the salt content of the rub into account).
  3. Spread plenty of rub on a flat plate.
  4. Now press the meat onto the rub. Season both sides and the edges in this way. The rub should cover the meat evenly and completely.
  5. Grill or fry the meat as usual.

Tip: The rubbed meat must rest for some time so that it can combine perfectly with the rub. It is best to wrap the meat in cling film and store it in the fridge for a few hours.

  • Beef steaks: such as bistecca fiorentina, T-bone steak, rib eye steak
