Make your own herb salt: This is a super quick way to add flavor and zest to your dishes. With oregano, basil, rosemary and other herbs, Italy’s herb garden has plenty of flavor to offer. Spicy, fresh and aromatic. What’s more, herbal salt always makes a great gift from the kitchen.

Make your own herbal salt with fresh herbs

The rule of thumb is very simple: 1 part salt to 1 part fresh herbs. Chop the herbs very finely and mix them with the salt. That’s it.

Stored in an airtight container in a cool place, this herbal salt will keep for a long time as it preserves the salt.

Please note that herbal salt with fresh herbs always remains slightly moist.

Make your own herbal salt with dried herbs

If you use dried herbs, the mixing ratio is: about 20% dried herbs, 80% salt.

Dried herbs retain the crystalline structure of the salt. It looks particularly nice if you make such a herb salt with coarse sea salt and then fill it into a transparent mill.

Which salt to use for herbal salt?

All types of salt are possible. However, please note that the finer your salt, the more finely chopped your herbs should be.

  • coarse sea salt (ideal for the spice grinder)
  • fine sea salt, rock salt or table salt (ideal for everyday cooking)
  • Fior di Sale (ideal for fine gourmet cuisine)

Which typical Italian herbs go well with which dish?

Italian ideas for flavored salts

But not only herbs are suitable for flavoring, you can also experiment with the peel of citrus fruits, chili, garlic and even drinks! Your guests will be amazed!

Lemon salt

To do this, mix 100 g of fine sea salt with the zest of a washed organic lemon. Leave the salt to dry for a day before using it. You can also make tangerine or orange salt in the same way.

Chili salt

Fresh chilli gives the salt a magnificent red color. Mix 1 part chili with 4 parts salt. Remove the seeds from the chilli peppers and blend to a fine paste. Now mix this with the salt. Watch out for the heat!

Of course, you can also use dried chili. Simply mix the desired amount of chili salt or chili flakes with a salt of your choice.

Garlic salt

For a very simple garlic salt, simply put a few peeled cloves of garlic in a screw-top jar with fine salt. Close the jar and leave it to rest for a week. Then take the garlic out again – done!

Red wine salt

Place 200 g of coarse sea salt in a heatproof bowl and pour over approx. 50 ml of red wine. The salt should not dissolve under any circumstances, less is more here. Now dry the bowl in the oven at 60°C for two hours, stirring occasionally. Place a wooden spoon in the door to allow the moist air to escape.

Balsamic salt

Balsamic salt works just as easily as the red wine salt just described. Simply replace the wine with balsamic vinegar.

Pesto salt

To do this, mix 200 g sea salt with 100 g dried basil, 1 dried garlic clove, 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan and 1 tablespoon pine nuts in a blender or mortar. Leave the salt to air dry for 2 days before using.

Herbal salt as a gift – DIY

Colorful and aromatic herbal salts are always a beautiful and very personal gift idea. Simply fill the salt into a nice glass jar, for example a rinsed tin jar with a golden lid. Tie a bow around it and decorate it with a decorative label!
