La Napoli di Antonio

Naples is a city full of contrasts and surprises that has far more to offer than its legendary pizza. Who would know this better than Antonio D’Agostino, who works in Gustini’s purchasing department. He was born in Naples and loves his city. Today he takes you on a tour of discovery through the metropolis and reveals where he takes friends when they visit him.

Must have Spaccanapoli

Spaccanapoli is a vibrant street in the heart of the city. Its name means “splitting Naples”, as it divides the historic center into two halves over a length of 2 kilometers. They are called Decumanus Major and Decumanus Minor. The street is lined with lots of small stores, pizzerias, churches and buildings from all eras. Here you can see and feel real Neapolitan life.

Mercato di Pignasecca

Be sure to visit one of the city‘s oldest markets, which is famous for its fresh fish! There is always a hustle and bustle here and lots of street food. Neapolitans eat here too, not just tourists. Toni recommends “Cuoppo fritto”. This is deep-fried seafood that you pick out of a paper bag with a stick.

Posillipo – Bathing in Naples

This district is picturesquely situated by the sea and has an impressive view of the gulf. Visit the Parco Virgiliano with the tomb of Virgil or the Parco Sommerso di Gaiola. Neapolitans like to bathe there. You can see Mount Vesuvius and catch polpo.

Ferrovia Cumana – Out of Naples

The narrow-gauge railroad takes you to the Campi Flegrei. Translated, they are called “burning fields”. This is a volcanically active region with hot springs and geological phenomena. Dante described it as the “forecourt of hell”. You can also take the train to visit the submerged ruins of the city of Baia or the Piscina mirabilis, an impressive ancient water reservoir.

Naples – home of pizza

If you ask locals in Naples about the best pizza, heated debates are inevitable. However, two names are almost always at the center of these discussions: “Di Matteo” and “Sorbillo”. Antonio thinks it makes sense to explore the world of contemporary pizza, for example in Vincenzo Capuano’s pizzerias.
